Shenandoah National Park Receives Environmental Excellence Award
The 2014 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards were announced April 8 at the 25th Annual Environment Virginia Symposium at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
Delaware North Parks & Resorts at Shenandoah was an Honorable Mention recipient of the 2014 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for its demonstrated commitment to the stewardship of Virginia’s natural resources through its sustainability program.
The Environmental Excellence Award recognizes businesses, industrial facilities, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies for significant environmental contributions in two categories: sustainability and land conservation.
The Commonwealth recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and commitment to implement pollution prevention practices to reduce environmental impacts and improve the natural environment.
In February 2013, Delaware North acquired the concessions contract for Shenandoah National Park. Immediately upon assuming the operations, GreenPath® was implemented. Through GreenPath®, the company’s environmental stewardship platform, Shenandoah committed to reduce pollution, minimize the use of energy, water, and other natural resources through increased efficiency and conservation. Environmental achievements include: composting 122,919 pounds of organic waste from the kitchens and stables operation; reducing water usage by 16.7%, based on 2012 figures; and purchasing a mobile propane bottle recycling unit.
